in my opinion :: two thousand six started off alright with Brokeback Mountain...then tanked unexpectedly with AI [gimme a break]. who knows where it'll go from here.

commentary on the commentary :: some time ago, i decided the categories were too static to adequately rate all movies, so i'm going to be a little more flexible from now on...hope it helps explain things... also, please note that these are first impressions...my interest in these movies seems to wax and wane over time, but these scores don't reflect that.

my favorites are called out with an asterisk.

categorization :: this movie was not a sexy thriller revolving around the underappreciated, sharp-minded, beautiful maid as the American advertising machine had us believe. nor is it the dark, artistic documentary of an overlooked sub-culture that it may have began as and often alludes to. rather--in spite of its unrealistically happy ending--this film deserves greater attention as a fictional exposé of a nonfiction, mainstream social problem. Make that problems.  And the mis-marketing is itself something of an exposé of the American media industry: guess what—Audrey Tautou isn't the main character! What's more, her character is necessarily prudish. The hero of this film is a black man from Nigeria (gasp!), played by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. Guess we're not to be trusted to be interested when that's the case, which I assume is why the movie posters and DVD case feature a bare-shouldered Tautou sporting a come-hither look. Ejiofor is the main character, and he carries the film—not Tautou, who delivers an acceptable, but less-than overwhelming performance as an incidental, side-story personality.
