09.april.2009 :: thursday :: thousands-miles friends
last night i dreamed that i ran in to (literally) my running friends from the la aids marathon at another road race. what a sweet, sweet dream. i miss those dear friends. i miss running with them. i miss the lifestyle of a distance runner; i miss the feeling of being fit to race on any given day. now, the amazing people i ran hundreds of miles with in preparation for the la marathon are thousands of miles away...but so close to my heart. the memory of their company on the asphalt and over post-run breakfasts, during the marathon and then again for Marine corps makes me desperate to run again. it would bring me closer to them. but since we moved to boston last december, i seem to have aged thirty years. or at least my right knee has. ongoing patellar tendonitis plus undiagnosed problems after a slip on the ice one cold morning have made it hard just to get around during the day. i haven't even tried to run since the slip. it's pretty discouraging. [sigh] i still plan to take the day off on april 20 to spectate the boston marathon. my high school friend Jeff boyd will be kicking much ass that day, and i want to be there to support him and the other runners.
14.april.2009 :: tuesday :: green grower
green growth #1: working on taxes. last-minute? you bet. but so far, so good. between the move to boston and out-the-nose student loan interest payments, our return should be enough to buy many, many burritos.
green growth #2: seventeen of the twenty seeds i planted back in march have sprouted. the breakdown: 2 yellow bell peppers, 7 black krim tomatoes, 4 argentina green tomatoes, and 4 kellogg breakfast tomatoes. these were seeds i harvested from the plants i grew last summer in charlotte. i'm feeling pretty large about this success rate...
20.april.2009 :: monday :: urban garden hopeful
this past weekend got off to a nice start with an outing to allendale farm up the street. four containers, 4 cubic feet of potting soil, 40 liters of topsoil, some seaweed/fish fertilzer, a bag of vermiculite and one watering can later, my latest urban garden exploits were well under way! in the containers on the front porch i've got sterling star lilies, dahlias, bee balm, ranunculus, marigolds, viola, greens and a flower mix called "magic carpet"--all seeds or bulbs. sounds kinda fun, huh? it occured to me that the lilies and dahlia probably want bigger containers than what i planted them in, but i'll leave them for now and make the switch next year if they don't do well. in the back "yard" (more like abandoned jungle/neighborhood dump), i excavated previously-undiscovered granite steps and a walkway. they were covered with a few inches of dirt, a few more inches of leaves, english ivy and other rogue plants and bushes. pretty crazy. there's lots more work to expose the rest of the walkway, but that'll be next weekend's project. i put in bulbs in a small bed on the upper level--glads & iris--plus three poker primrose plants and a scattering of shade wildflower seeds to top things off. i really hope at least a few come up. there's not much sun back there, but hopefully enough to coax the little plants into putting on a show :)
